Professor McCoy has made hmself one of the handful of scholars with a deep understanding of fhe forces governing politics in a country of 70 million people who seem much easier to understand than others in Southeast Asia but who are influenced by Malay as well as Spanish and American customs and ideals. Today, as the Phililppine Armed Forces play another decisive role in their nation's history, this analysis is of immediate importance to those seeking to explore the role of armed, trained military leaders in countries whose democracies require support.

A cautionary tale

I bought the book because I was researching the acceptance of torture within an organizational or military context, and for that it's very useful -- and extremely well-written. However, as I read McCoy's inspired exploration of military socialization to either support civilian primacy and rule of law (at the cost of the soldiers' lives), or to disdain and despise civilian values and to become the law (at the cost of civilian lives), I was tremendously impressed.

He looks at how brutalization rather than civil socialization turns a military from our protectors to our terrorizers -- starting with harsh, degrading,even lethal hazing of cadets, on to ruthless interrogation of real enemies that creeps and then falls headlong into torture, then extra-legal detentions of civilian dissidents, then the torture and murder of civilians as a means of social repression and control, and with it coup attempts and martial law.

In this process, the military organization ceases to understand and obey the absolute requirement for great self-restraint by those who wield great firepower. It begins to believe its own prideful hype, and particularly in learning the unique potency of torture to destroy human will and rip apart the social fabric, the military begins to feel all-powerful. It no longer pledges allegiance to a nation or to democratic or broad social values, but becomes politicized and dedicated to protect only a few partisan values, or no values other than power and control for their own sake.

Read this book along with Mikey Weinstein's With God On Our Side, Scahill's Blackwater, and Lagouranis' Fear Up Harsh, and tell me you don't break into a cold sweat.

I may not be the first person to bring this matter about Mr. Alfred W. McCoy's book, particularly about the book cover. I do not know how authoritative he is about Philippine setting, but the display of the Philippine Flag on the book cover is WRONG. A real treasure, an intro marketing book with substance

I really like this book. There are around 10 intro marketing textbooks, and they're almost all either (co-)authored by Kotler, or shameless rip-offs of his books.
Hats of to Roger Best for coming up with a book that's truly different. The approach is refreshingly down-to-earth, almost nerdy, including a lot of frameworks for financial or qualitative analysis that would be useful to any marketing manager in his or her daily life. Although it can be used as an introductory marketing textbook, you'll find a lot of material here that you don't find in Kotler and Kotler-clones, so I also recommend it to people who've had an intro marketing course, and who want to move beyond the basics. Likewise, this would be a great book for practicing marketing managers who've been out in the field a couple of years, and want to brush up on the basics, without wading through the usual definitions and useless frameworks in other intro textbooks.
The entire book is in black and white, lacking the usual fancy graphics, and it is only about half the length of other textbooks. I actually find that refreshing, and it is an extension the substance-over-hype approach behind this book.

This is a great book for managers who want to understand marketing better. It is truly customer-focused and performance-oriented. I teach Marketing in EMBA classes in the US and in Switzerland, and the students love this book, together with the applications.

A standard textbook for many Universities

Market based management walks the reader through the basic foundations of marketing. Each chapter takes the reader through examples and explanations of these foundational principals.

Although the text is clear, it feels like it is written by an accountant rather than by someone who writes for a living.

This kindle version was disappointing with ye number of restrictions. Only my iPad was able to read it, and features like dictation were disabled.

For the cost, rent or reselling is a better option.

An Excellent Academic Judo Work

I have found no other Judo or martial arts work that approaches the academic level of this one in scholarship and completeness. Draeger and Ishikawa have been VERY thorough in their assessment of HOW to train for Judo, offering for the first time a catagorized breakdown of training techniques into four areas: Preparatory, supplementary, compound, and auxiliary. Training is approached for the first time in English, as a scientific undertaking which like many other sports, is based upon and helped by the study of kinesiology (study of movement, body & muscle, etc.). The authors don't simply tell us, they give us the "why" of things. Helpful diagrams and quality sequence photographs help convey the ideas, though I wouldn't recommend this volume for someone who doesn't have the patience to read. Training methods utilizing partners, weights, belt, equipment, and gravity are detailed. Originally printed in 1962, This recent re-release paperback edition is affordable and a welcome return. Don't let the age of publication dissuade you from learning from this volume, it was revolutionary upon its oroginal release, and little approaching its depth has been published in the popular press since. There is another terrific judo book by Draeger & Inokuma which I hope Tuttle will consider rereleasing again soon, called "Weight Training for Championship Judo", which goes even deeper into advanced sports theory. Judo was Draeger's first martial art, and I was surprised years ago to discover how deep and ground breaking his research with Kodokan colleagues had been. Altogether a superb volume.

classic training worthy of any library

I'm a big fan of classic training methods and of using a partner as resistance and this book is full of similarly great techniques. Many of these exercises can be adapted to practicioners of other arts. This is well worth the read for both it's strengthening techniques and it's text.

No Nonsense Training

Judging by the one and five star reviews below me this is a "love it or hate it" kind of book. I love it, while admitting its drawbacks.
Originally written in 1962 by trainers from the Kodokan in Tokyo, its purpose was to catalog the traditional calisthenic exercises of judo and promote the then-radical use of modern western free weights. Part one is theory, part two is practice.
The books only flaw is its age. Looking at the pictures, one feels like Jerry Seinfeld when Lloyd Bridges decided to whip him into shape: "It's like a fitness museum!" Some exercises are pictured employing such unfashionable devices as rubber expanders and one-piece barbells of the sort that circus strongmen always use. Scrupulously up-to-date people will no doubt find some of it pretty funny, and the looks one would get at the gym when doing, say, reverse running on all fours would be funnier still.
Never the less, the book is packed solid with explanations and photos of hundreds of damn good exercises and lots of fairly good training information, all of it presented from a perspective of what is useful for judo. If supplemented by some common sense and maybe a book on gym safety it is quite valuable.

Best stats book out there without the errors of the 6th edition

The quickest, most accurate stats book out there. Warning: you must read it carefully, you can't really skim. That said, if you do read it carefully, even just the first few chapters, you will truly understand basic stats. Before reading this I didn't get significance or what a t-test really meant. Now I can speak the lingo and critically assess other authors work. Just a great book if you give it a few hours to sink in.

Get the 5th edition, not the 6th, for some reason the 6th is full of typos and errors in the examples.

Horrifying Errors

Unfortunately, this book is filled with typos and mathematical errors, including the solutions section. A maths book clearly fails by letting its readers down and results in significant time loss when any errors exist in the solutions section, believe me. Some are even as basic as addition and subtraction errors in formulating solutions tables. The errors are otherwise just about acceptable in the standard text.

Whilst it reads well in parts, its strengths come from the examples provided, which relate to real life clinical trials and data. However, despite my relatively decent mathematical background, derivations sometimes suddenly lead to a formula or solution out of the blue. The text unfortunately does so in parts too leaving out the systematic approach to the explanation.

I guess you can't have both a true mathematical guide with such clinical emphasis, but for me, the typos just destroy it.

I never read these books but at the moment i need this book and although i am doing alot of this it allows you to see what ways you benifit out of understanding the child themselves and how you can still be a human in the end. If you have unruly kids this book is a great starting point and yes even though there are some boring bits the majority of it is funny and unboring. One of the best books i will tell my friends about and one of the first i would give to a new family or family like myself that has more than 3 kids. enjoy and get your life back

Humorous and practical

This book gives useful advises on how to deal with everyday problems that all parents are facing. These advises are illustrated with some more or less difficult cases that Nigel Latta dealt with as child psychologist. Particularly young, enthusiastic parents, who are ready to sacrifice all their time and energy to their child only to find themselves later exhausted and frustrated (since a child can consume limitless amount of parents' attention), will find here recipes on how to set reasonable borders for the child's behavior and thus get some free time for themselves.
