Great overview of Persian traditional music

It is with great pleasure that I recommend this book by my old friend Lloyd Miller. He and I performed Persian folk music in Los Angeles in 1988 and I have fond memories of that concert. He was working on his dissertation at that time and it's wonderful to see it published. My only complaint is that it is very difficult to find. No surprise to see that he has done an excellent job of surveying this unique and beautiful tradition, which is so difficult to describe in Western terminology. Some parts of the book are quite technical, and will be rather formidable for beginners. Ethnomusicologists with a special interest in the Middle East will be delighted. Ella Zonis' 1973 tome "Classical Persian Music" might be somewhat easier going for the novice, but it is also tough to locate ... try a good library. Lloyd Miller's book is an indispensible tool and companion for those of us who heve learned to love this music. Bravo!

The author shares his vast knowledge of this esoteric subject. I would have liked to have seen more on the interplay of the 'ghazals' of Hafez as they relate to avaz. The role of the American Peace Corps professional musicians in Iran during the 1960s and 1970s should have been discussed.

Perfect for bright or GT kids

I teach GT at the elementary level and am constantly looking for ways to challenge the kids while holding their interest. They LOVE this and beg me to do more. They want it for homework! The problems in the book get progressivly more difficult, but there are clues in the back for those who get stumpted. (balance problems only)

The book has several types of problems throughout- one is a tic tac toe type of grid where kids have to find the missing numbers so that each row and column has the same sum (like magic squares), but I find these are too difficult. There are also multistep problems where a + c = 72 and you know that a = 28, find the value of c. These aren't as much fun as the balance problems. I only do the balance problems with my kids. They are 2 multistep problems per page (which is another reason why the kids probably like it). I highly recomend this book to any math teacher or parent of a kid who fears algebra.

Buen primer intento

Está muy bien escrito, más aún teniendo en cuenta de que se trata del primer libro de este autor. La trama es interesante y la historia es sólida en cuanto a pistas y hechos. Sin embargo, para mí fue muy evidente desde el inicio quién era el asesino e incluso por qué lo hacía, así que quizás debió incorporar más pistas falsas y otros sospechosos para confundir a los lectores y que el final no fuera tan obvio. Otro de los errores, en mi opinión, es incluir absolutamente TODOS los detalles de todo. Sí, se nota que hizo una minuciosa investigación, pero no era necesario meter todos los datos hallados sino solo los más importantes porque si no pasa que el libro se alarga inútilmente. Por el contrario, en medio de tantos datos, me pareció que faltaba un desarrollo mayor de los personajes y de sus vidas personales, son casi unidimensionales, solo los conocemos por su trabajo, no sabemos casi nada de sus historias, de sus pasados, de sus sueños, etc.
A pesar de todo, es un buen primer intento, así que seguiré leyendo las próximas obras del autor.

Best book for teaching reading

This is one of my favorite books for teaching reading.

1. There are four texts in each unit. All of the text in the unit cover the same topic: media, education, etc. These topics are ones typically found on the IELTS test. As a result, students can build up their vocabulary and background knowledge on these topics. Because, the four articles are about the same topic, the language and target vocabulary is recycled throughout the four articles, so that by the time students get to the third and fourth articles, which are the most difficult, they have an easier time reading them. Also, the articles are interesting and up to date. Even I learn something new from reading them. The readings are also long enough for students to get enough practice reading long articles but not too long that you can't do some of them in class.

2. Each unit also covers both a vocabulary strategy and a reading strategy so that you can practice both while doing the readings.

3. Each reading also has key vocabulary for the students to learn with a glossary in the back with definitions and example sentences. The vocabulary coverage is probably the weakest part of the textbook as it not covered in much depth. However, if it were, then this book would be way too long. I have created my own vocabulary exercises for each unit.

This book is ideal for an intermediate level.
