Great Insights Into Academic Culture

A very insightful book on the four cultures of the academy, and how to manage through them. While the areas around development and managing through at the end of the book are a bit dense, the bulk of the book is great. It is filled with cases, stories and examples of the cultures - as well as their history, traits and challenges. Ranging from community college experiences and union shops to the collegiate culture of the Ivy League, the book brings to light four dominant cultures, their interplay, and the challenges of managing through them Good insight and useful read.

About the Author

William “Rick” Crandall (PhD, University of Memphis) is professor of Management at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Previously, Dr Crandall taught for eleven years at Concord College, Athens, where he served on the college’s crisis management team. Dr Crandall’s articles on crisis management have appeared in a wide range of journals.

John A. Parnell (PhD, University of Memphis, EdD, Campbell University; MAEd, East Carolina University) is the William Henry Belk Distinguished Professor of Management at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, where he was recipient of the 2005 Adolph Dial Award for Scholarly and Creative Activity.

John E. Spillan (PhD, Warsaw School of Economics) is professor of Business Administration at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. His research interests center on crisis management, international marketing, entrepreneurship, and international business. His articles have appeared in a wide range of journals.

This book will be a very nice addition for any manager who wants to become an expert in handling crisis in the workplace. To my thinking this should be a bible for all people in management positions.

Needed it for a class

I needed this book for a class. It was pretty stupid in that leadership has the same qualities regardless of the situation. So, this is "crisis management" - big deal. A leader is a leader. I got into it about that with my prof a few times. The book outlines what to do in a crisis, but it is the same things all of my other leadership courses taught. I really think this is just a made-up segment of management that is aimed at getting more money from students. If there is crisis or peace, a leader should have a plan right? Dumb book.

i had a really bad time with this book

This book had SO MANY MISTAKES. I would be stuck in a problem for hours because i had no idea how they got the answer, turns out the answer in the back WAS WRONG!. This didnt happen to me just once, it happened to me multiple times, not only were the answers wrong in the back of the book, but the examples they showed you had glitches too. Instead of showing you how to do the problem with actual calculations, they wanted you to you EXCEL!!! i had a really bad time with this book. I do not recommend.

Kamal I.M. Al-Malah, Ph.D., is head of the department of chemical engineering at the University of Ha’il in Saudi Arabia. He holds B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in chemical/biochemical engineering. Dr. Al-Malah graduated from Oregon State University in 1993, and his area of specialty during his M.S. and Ph.D. programs dealt with protein interactions and behavior at interfaces in biological systems.
