Samuel Bacharach, the McKelvey-Grant Professor at Cornell University, is the cofounder of the New York City–based Bacharach Leadership Group. As an entrepreneur and financial manager I constantly find myself in the position of negotiating with my own team. New business plans, new markets, new products all require a buy in from my team, my investors and my co-partners. This book takes the psychology and drama and breaks it down to a science. The book is readable and uses the right examples to keep it flowing while still offering enough substance to make it practical. Highly recommend it for anyone is a dynamic organization.

Not what many expect, but outstanding.

A group of students and I just finished reading THE LIVES OF A CELL as part of a readings in biology seminar this spring. Once you read the first 3-4 chapters it becomes obvious that there is not a central theme (or is there) for the book.
Contents of this book are a compilation of reflective articles originally published in a medical journal. Chapter topics range all over the place, but they present many topics drawn from biological thought prominent through the mid-1970s -- everything from molecular biology to Gaia to sociobiology.
There is a wealth of material here appropriate for discussion among undergraduate students, professionals, and perhaps even science-directed high school students. Each of the 29 chapters are about 3-5 pages long, can be easily digested, and beg to be reflected upon and discussed.
As for the writing, other Amazon reviewers have referred to the writing in this book as being poetic. While I didn't see so much of that, I was struck by Thomas' ability to turn a phrase, make a point, and discuss complex biological ideas in a manner that is easily understood. The writing in the book is a definite plus.
There are also times in the book where I can imagine Thomas grinning as he wrote, or, perhaps giving the occasional wink! He must have had a wonderful sense of humor.
OK, back to the theme...if there is one...it seems to me that one common theme of several of the chapters has to do with communication -- oral, chemical, behavioral, and genetic. Other possible themes include the fact that humans are "not all that." That we are part of the global system, not running it. Another possibility includes the idea that everything can be an analogy of the way that a cell works -- organelles, membranes, cellular processes, products, and so forth.
This is excellent reading for anyone interested in ideas about life and living. Well written, occasionally humorous, and intruiging.

Read it decades ago, it is even better now. Thomas foresees so much. One of the few thinkers who could see something like the Internet coming before we even had pcs. He is an elegant writer. The essay on Probability is a fine place to turn when one needs inspiration. I am giving copies of the paperback to friends.

If you ever want a book on transits, this is it. This lil book gives you an explaination of the combination of planets good or bad. As an astrologer both from the Uranian school of thought to the traditional astrology, this book has got to be a good one!

Great for beginners and advanced astrologers alike, I am sure this book will be a handy tool in your astrologic library!

OUTSTANDING REFERENCE WORK ON PLANETARY TRANSITS

The book's subtitle - What days favor you? - originally made me give it a berth. However, it has now proved not to do the work justice. This book is not a traditional black-and-white approach to transits, and both positive and negative things are said about every transiting combination.

There is a section not only on each of the planets but also on the moon's nodes giving interpretations of the transits to every planet, the node, the ascendant and the midheaven. Those wanting interpretations of the planets transiting the houses, however, will need to look elsewhere.

Even if the conclusions of hard transits often seem negative a good knowledge of modern psychology will enable the reader to quickly derive the best ways of handling them.

Other sections of the book include instructions on how to read an ephemeris, midpoint work and lots of case examples which vividly illustrate the effects of the transits at work.

Like the Combination of Stellar Influences this is quite a slim book which nevertheless contains an absolute mass of information.

I highly recommend for anyone wanting to understand the simplified meanings of planetary combinations at a low price.

Everyone Switch

"Angels At The Ritz" is the third collection of short stories by William Trevor that I have read. Much like the previous volumes, many of the stories share similar feelings if not the same theme, and are all generally very good.
The dozen stories here range from locales within Isfahan in Iran/Persia, to an office and the relationships that can develop, which could take place virtually anywhere. Relationships in all their disordered states are what struck me about this collection. If this were a puzzle, the reader could place the pieces together from various tales and create successful relations as opposed to the ones we are presented with. There are examples of couples that never started, those that never should have started, those that are growing old and contemplate events to make them interesting once again, and finally those of regret for what might have been, and others for what could have been but for an action taken or omitted.
Delusion of one's self or the view that another is believed to hold also is a frequent participant. The result is primarily about people that either are unhappy, should be happy, or could be, but for decisions that at times are quite minor. There is only one story that actually contemplates the swapping of spouses, however it never gets beyond G-Rated action, and perhaps PG-13 thoughts.
So if human studies interest you, William Trevor has once again supplied a variety of situations. You can experience these people within stories like, "Angels At The Ritz", "Mrs. Silly", "The Tennis Court", and "Last Wishes". Mr. Trevor is a meticulous observer and recorder of human nature, and his stories are generally very worthwhile.

Unlike Other Mountain Home Books, Which Are All About Rusticity

If you're into house books, you'll be familiar with this type of book: it showcases a wide number of mountain/outdoorsy homes, featuring each in a few pages with photos and text. If you're like me and adore such books, you'll find yourself dreamily paging through the pages, gleaning various ideas about interior design and even house building. The houses are all modern, yes, but many play with organic "mountain" shapes and textures and forms.

So why four stars instead of five? It could be because of the format or it could be because of the quality of the photos, but I'm convinced that I've seen much prettier coffee table books about houses. The images are nice and the subject matter is photogenic, but the book simply doesn't mesmerize me with its beauty. I'm not condemning this book, just saying I'm unwilling to go to 5 stars for a book that isn't 100% dazzling.
