The perfect travel guides - Rough Guides

The Rough Guides speak my travel language. While waiting for their new guide to Morocco to be published I got a couple other travel guides to Morocco. They were good, but I was not really able to plan my trip until my Rough Guide arrived. Something about the writing, the priorities and the advice of the authors fit me just right. I always want to travel with Rough Guides as my source.

I am an adventurous traveler. Prefer the road less traveled, and like to find hidden treasures. I travel low budget, but I like that the Rough Guides offer different budget options, in case I'm ready for a more upscale experience along the way.

Why do we have sex? One of the main biological reasons, contends Ridley, is to combat disease. By constantly combining and recombining genes every generation, people "keep their genes one step ahead of their parasites," thereby strengthening resistance to bacteria and viruses that cause deadly diseases or epidemics. Called the "Red Queen Theory" by biologists after the chess piece in Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass which runs but stays in the same place, this hypothesis is just one of the controversial ideas put forth in this witty, elegantly written inquiry. Ridley, a London-based science writer and a former editor of the Economist , argues that men are polygamous for the obvious reason that whichever gender has to spend the most time and energy creating and rearing offspring tends to avoid extra mating. Women, though far less interested in multiple partners, will commit adultery if stuck with a mediocre mate. In Ridley's not wholly convincing conclusion, even human intellect is chalked up to sex: virtuosity, individuality, inventiveness and related traits are what make people sexually attractive. Photos. This is a fascinating book filled with lucid prose and seductive reasoning. Freelance science writer Ridley reaches into the literature of genetics; molecular, theoretical and evolutionary biology; ecology; sociology; and anthropology to weave an extraordinary tale of the evolution of human nature, beginning with the evolution of sex. Using Lewis Carroll's Red Queen (who runs as fast as she can to stay in the same place) as a metaphor for evolution, Ridley shows how sex was the result of an evolutionary arms race between hosts and their disease-causing parasites. Ridley covers so much ground that transitions may be abrupt or unclear, particularly in the last two chapters; also, his review of human homosexuality is thin. His occasionally pompous style (including his immediate dismissal of those who do not believe in evolution) may offend some readers. However, Ridley clearly explains many complex and remarkable concepts for a wide audience. Highly recommended.

A former editor of The Economist asks how sexual selection has molded human nature. The title here alludes to a scene in Lewis Carroll in which Alice and the Red Queen run as fast as possible to remain in the same place. Ridley looks first at current thinking on why sexual reproduction exists at all, when many organisms manage quite well without it. The answer has to do with disease: a species must rebuild its defenses from one generation to the next merely to keep from falling behind in the race against opportunistic viruses. Sex, by allowing a new shuffle of the genetic material with each generation, improves the chance of survival. But the predators also improve with each generation, so the race (vide Lewis Carroll) is never over. Turning to animals, Ridley describes mating patterns with an eye as to whether mates are selected for health and vigor, or for esthetics. He concludes that both play a role: neither sickly fashion-plates nor healthy wallflowers will pass on their genes as often as those who combine both beauty and health. Given the contrast between a brief sexual act and long years of child- rearing, aggressive males will tend to have more children, while nurturing women will have healthier ones. Those who select mates with these qualities will transmit them to ensuing generations, along with other qualities affecting offspring survival. Ridley contends--not a popular thesis in recent decades--that such genetic programming is far more central to human nature than social conditioning. The Truth About Sex

I read the celebrated "Moral Animal" some 10 years ago, re-read it and underlined it at least twice. Finally I had found a theory of human nature and psychology I could wholeheartedly believe in. Ten years later, I have now found "Red Queen" - more of the same, but specialized particularly in the huge role sexual selection played during our evolutionary history.

Experienced scientist and science journalist Matt Ridley compiled these findings of evolutionary psychology (EP) for the lay reader in 1993 - and "Red Queen" is still a timely treatise. Disclaimer: For those who are offended by the very suggestion that our behavior evolved from a pre-ape ancestor - and that our behavior is an elaborate, sophisticated manifestation of language and socialization which evolved by natural selection along with a huge brain - you won't like this book.

I realize the following assessments of mine are anecdotal, but here goes: I have seen how men and women preen, peacock-like, showing off their best (?) sides during courtships, and how they pair off in society according to commonly accepted determinants of status, differing depending on sex. I have seen how the competitive, power-seeking behavior of men is drastically tempered by marriage. I have seen how married men who are careful in all other endeavors will take uncharacteristic risks for a sexual fling. I have observed how women tend to choose (in a mate) financial success and stability over looks (if they have to choose), whereas men tend to choose beauty over all else. I have seen how men and women differ in their outlooks: Men (generally) want to be practical, shrewd, assertive, dominating, competitive, critical, and self-controlled. Women (usually) want to be loving, affectionate, impulsive, sympathetic, and generous. One in three men said they had fantasized about having sex with more than a thousand women in their lives. Women overwhelmingly fantasize about having sex with a familiar partner. I have read about and subsequently observed how people (unconsciously?) score each other during their social interactions, rating relationship values for the future. Finally, game theory concepts are widely known to be utilized by humans in sexual and social interactions. All these concepts are predicted by EP. I could go on with other examples, but in short, I'm a sucker for EP.

Recently, I have read about resistance in university humanities departments to EP - humans being so special and all. We are - in the sense that our intelligence has given us free reign over our world - but humans are still very imperfect. We are poorly designed in many ways (backs, knees, tendency to war, self-delusion) - exactly what one would expect from evolution. Cockroaches or certain scorpions, which can live without food and water for almost a year, are also impressive. There is every reason to believe that our (at times) unethical sexual behavior as well as our superior intelligence evolved in just as Rube-Goldberg a fashion as did our (very complicated and redundant) blood clotting mechanism.

Anyway, this book is superb. I will close, since I could end up nattering on for more pages than most would want to read. Consider moving "Red Queen" closer to the top of your TBR list. A Best Buy.

To arrive to this and other conclusions, Ridley goes a long and difficult way through biology, genetics and continents, starting with a basic question: why is there sex at all? After all, many species reproduce without it. The first three or four chapters of "The Red Queen" may be a little onerous, but apparently they are necessary to support the last ones.
This is a book about evolution with a focus on human sexuality and the human mind. Everything on humans - our bodies, our behavior towards the opposite sex, even our minds and social rules - is a direct result of a process called sexual selection that allows the reproduction of the fittest, therefore transmiting their genes to the next generations.
When answering why there is sex at all and how men and women's bodies and minds evolved in the last million years, we come to many uncomfortable truths about adultery, rape, incest and life. Why do more rich men marry beautiful women and not the other way around? Why have the attempts to sell pornogrphy to women and romantic novels to men failed? And above all this: why did evolution produce different minds in men a women?
Take all of the above and pack it with a red cover, and you have one of the most amazing readings of the year.

If you're deciding whether to buy this book...

To summarize anything I might say below - this is an incredible book. Mind-blowing. If you're reading reviews (as I do) trying to find the few people who didn't love the book so you can have an "unbiased" view, very good for you. (that's how I choose books, usually) My unbiased view is this - I *very rarely* give out fives. This is one of the few books that deserves it.
Matt Ridley explains in the epilogue of The Red Queen that half of his ideas are probably wrong, just like those of Freud, Jung, and many others. But this common-sense attitude, projected onto the evolution of reproduction, is EXACTLY what about this book makes it so incredible.
Ridley is grounded in a reality unfettered by religion, social science, social mores, or really any sort of external "moral" influence. (Not that he's the antichrist or anything - he's just not letting standard social concepts influence his ideas.) A few people who don't usually want to accept reality (ultra-conservatives) will hate this book. Fine. If you believe in creationism, go elsewhere. Otherwise, read this book! This is not a political or an ideological work - this is a scientific text on human evolution, and how it has been influenced by sex.
I have been able to RIVET people with discussions of facts and theories from this book. It's the best money I've spent on a single book in quite a long while. And in case I sound like way too much of a suck-up - I haven't read any of Ridley's other works, not because I haven't bought them, but because I looked through them in bookstores, and every one I looked at seems either uninteresting, wrong, or awful. But this one is GREAT!

Worth every cent and more

This is an expensive paperback book, no doubt about it. I paid full price. I thought maybe I was stupid to pay so much. But I was surprised at how outstanding a book it is. This the best book I have purchased in quite a while, and the best in its genre. It is like several excellent books in one:

- implementing data structures from scratch in Java
- using built-in Java library data structures
- algorithms
- solving programming problems
- testing
- UML

It is the selection of topics that makes your time so efficient, the thought that went into that, that makes it unique, if these are the topics you want to learn or brush up on.

Cons: There are a few errors I found in the text. Also I find the semigloss paper finish annoying, too much glare reflected back.

I am giving it five stars to make up for the, erm, clue-challenged reviews

This is a book for a second-semester course in data structures. It teaches good design principles and classic data structures, while doing students a favor and using the standard Java data structures (instead of a custom library, as many other books do).

No, it doesn't teach concurrency, and neither should it--that's not a topic for second-semester CS students.

And, duh, it makes students fill in code. Hello one-star reviewer: That's how you learn computer science--by writing your own code.

Concise and informative

This was the textbook for my data structures and algorithms course. We covered the entire book in the semester.

The professor supplemented the book with some of his own material, in particular the section on graphs which took advantage of the fact that integers can not only be stored in the graph but serve as an array index; so we did something a little more generic that could accept any data type. But the text itself was a pretty good reference even for the supplemented portions of the course.

One nice feature of the book is the refresher on Java. If you are a more experienced programmer but just have forgotten how Java does something, this is a great quick way to look it up without being drowned in largely useless introductory material designed for absolute beginners.

I will be hanging on to the book for my personal library even though I have already passed the course.

Gifted Writing, Clever, Insightful...

I've reread the poems again and again, just to open up another wormhole of perspective in my life. This collection is brilliantly strung together, making for a unique collaboration of classical philosophy and contemporary vision - its fun. Courtright crafts a journey that is ancient, playful, absurd, and epic all at once. The work keeps a light tone, accented with witty antics, while deeply reflecting on... mortal and immortal things.

A talented poet

This is an impressive collection--both in terms of the very careful craft of the poems and in terms of the weighty content of the ideas. These are no poems about peeling potatoes: Courtright tackles ambitious subject matter, from philosophy to science to the meaning we can make of human emotion, and he always comes to satisfactory endings. (This is something I find SO hard to do once I broach philosophical questioning). In terms of craft, Courtright relies mostly on lyric and elliptical poems with only the slightest hint at narrative sometimes, and he does so masterfully. The poems feel carefully wrought--nothing extraneous, nothing missing--and the line breaks and forms the poems took always felt tremendously satisfied. My favorite poem in the collection (though many are very good) is the title poem "Punchline." This was the most thought provoking and emotionally resonant piece for me personally. A talented poet.

Poems about the World Beyond, Below, and Within

Nick Courtright's debut collection Punchline demonstrates impressive range and skill. In addition to his finely-crafted free verse, Courtright consistently surprises us with his philosophical expansiveness and his careful attention to the minutiae of nature. For example, he observes that humans "seek the face of God/ and find it/on the internet. Maybe/ the face of God was always there, in the sand itself,/ and the ant had access to it." These are poems that seek everything, question everything, yet take nothing for granted. Sometimes mystical, other times existential, these poems address themes that would be at home in the work of Blake, Whitman, and Bly. However, despite the grand sweep of his ideas, Courtright works in carefully-controlled verse, somehow managing to pack a cosmic wallop into terse, well-wrought lyrics. Buy this book if you value craft, intellect, and wit in your poetry.

About the Author

Ronald A. Hites, PhD, is a Distinguished Professor in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University. He is a Fellow of the American Chemical Society and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has been an editor of Environmental Science and Technology since 1990.

Jonathan D. Raff, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University. He was the recipient of a National Science Foundation American Competitiveness in Chemistry Postdoctoral Fellowship and a United States Environmental Protection Agency STAR Graduate Fellowship.

This book is OK ....but not great. If details were provided on how to answer the problems were available in another book, I would give it an excellent review. Unfortunately my abilities to solve the questions is limited to about 75% of the problems. I would really like more help to do the remaining 25%. While this is likely a reflection on my own abilities, I can not give a five star rating to a book that does not allow me to learn thoroughly.

If you are in a class that uses this book, you have my sympathy. This is a worthless excuse for a textbook. It provides almost no instruction on how to actually do problems, skips steps, and makes outrageous assumptions.

Real world environmental chemistry

I am extremely impressed by the 2nd Edition of "Elements of Environmental Chemistry". It begins with a set of useful skills for addressing problems frequently encountered in Environ Chem. For most students this should be a refresher. Regardless, I suspect that it will help many to make greater use of concepts that they have encountered but not fully absorbed. The second chapter continues with knowledge -- mass balance and kinetics -- needed to deal with frequently encountered environmental problems. The subsequent chapters introduce the major topics in Environmental Chemistry, including the chemistry responsible for air pollution/smog, climate change, pesticides, persistent organic pollutants, dioxins and flame retardants. The writing style is clear and frequently compelling -- at times you feel like you might be reading an article in the New Yorker. A case in point is the chapter on PCBs, dioxins and flame retardants, beginning with the disease that the Japanese called "Yusho". Not only is the text entertaining, so are many of the problems. This book contains one of the best sets of "real world" problems that I have encountered. Some of the problems are used as teaching examples and solved in the text. The answers to all of the problems are listed at the back of the text. I recommend this book to anyone studying or working in the area of environmental chemistry.
