A little different and unique approach to achieving physical fitness.

I have been a fitness fanatic most of my life and I have participated in just about every type of exercise program. I have also read and wrote reviews on numerous physical fitness books over the years. I was fortunate and picked up this volume (The High Intensity Fitness Revolution for Men by Pete Cerqua) recently for a bargain price. I am familiar with the many fitness routines being practiced today, but I had not heard of this type of routine up until I read this book.

I found the approach in this book to be quite different than most of the other fitness programs I have practiced over the years. This book is organized into nine chapters. The first chapter covers the top 10 reasons why short workouts are better. The second chapter provides information on getting you started in the program. The third chapter explains a few tests you need to do to determine your baseline. Chapter four covers high intensity home workouts. Chapter five shows high intensity exercises for the legs. Chapter six deals with high intensity pushing exercises. Chapter seven explains high intensity pulling exercises. Chapter eight emphasizes the importance of rest and the final chapter covers high intensity nutrition.

This text is loaded with clear color photographs explaining each exercise and how to perform them. This specific routine is unlike other fitness programs. It is more a combination of half and full contractions in the exercises which works your muscles harder with fewer reps. If you are seeking an exercise program which is short but effective, you should check out this book. I found the exercises really work the muscles when done exactly as the book teaches you.

Editor Sorely Needed

I read an article in the New York Times about new research that showed effectiveness of short, high intensity workouts. It got me interested, so I went to Amazon to see if I could find a book would have this kind of exercise program. I first saw "The 90-Second Fitness Solution", but it seemed like it was more geared toward women. Then, I saw "High Intensity Fitness Revolution for Men: A Fast and Easy Workout with Amazing Results" and decided to get it.

I've read this book several times and I do have two problems with book itself. The first problem is the writing. This book was so terribly edited that I thought it was self-published. For example:
In order to get your baseline for a home workout he says to "Put your arms straight out in front of you for balance and do a deep knee bend or squat." The accompanying picture, though, shows the the arms on the wall (a wall sit). Does he want me to do a squat or a wall sit?
For the home level workout one, there are three exercises to do. In the description section for the single leg wall sit, he writes, "Do the exercises in the order listed with as little rest as possible." Does he want me to rest as little as possible between the sets or does he me resting between the three exercises (Single Leg Wall Sit, Alternate Leg Raise Plank, and Alternate Arm Raise X-Plank)?

The second problem I had was the layout of the book. There are three workout programs he has for people who go to the gym that work on different parts of the body- "legs", "push" and "pull". He first writes, in chapter 5, about the legs workout one, week one, then legs workout two, week two and finally legs workout three, week three. Next, in chapter 6, he writes about push workout one, week one... and so on and so forth. I don't understand if he wants me to work on each part of the body all week for one week ( bit strange) or to work on a different body part each day (more understandable). If he wants me do the latter, why didn't he organize the workouts by week, e.g., Week One, Day One: Legs... Week One, Day Two: Push.... Week One, Day three: Pull?
Then there is all the white space in the book...

I decided to give it three stars because I just got this book the other day and so I'm not sure how effective the exercises are. They seem good. I plan to update this review in a couple of months or so to comment on the effectiveness of the workout program.

By the way, as of this writing, there are only two reviews of this book. One reviewer has only written one review- a glowing review of this book and the other has written four reviews, three of them on the same day (the other was written a day later) and two of them are for book written by this author.

I've decided to lower the rating from three to one. In the past two months, I've lost over 15 pounds, but not by help from this book. I tried reading it, but it was too disorganized. I found even more problems with this book. If it were a physical book instead of an ebook, I'd throw it away. Save your money and find another book.

Poorly written and organised, and lacking clarity.

Although it might be the result of a good deal of knowledge and expertise, this book appears to have been written in a hurry, and without the benefit of a competent editor or designer. As much as the author claims to save you time exercising, you may find yourself wasting time in re-reading this book over and over again to try to pick out the parts most applicable to yourself, and then structuring the information in an organised and easy-to-follow way; a need the author has failed to accommodate.

To add insult to injury, the author insults the reader's intelligence with a hokey little populist tract on "What is a real man?" (featuring such gems of BS as "a guy's guy"), as if we should care about his opinion on this, which is irrelevant to the subject of the book.

However, having tried the 90-second exercises in Cerqua's previous book, I suspect the principles are well worth trying, so I plan to make the best sense I can out of this book.
