I'm proud to count this author among my best friends

For all the intensity of emotion I've shared with my friend Allen over the past 34 years, I never knew how well he could place the written word to his thoughts. Whether or not you ever understood or followed the sport of wrestling, this story evokes an emotional reaction. Anyone who has ever competed - whether in sport, academics, socially or otherwise - can relate at least in part to this story as it's so well told. I've enjoyed the sport since watching Al and the guys compete in high school, and I think I was one of a handful girls back then who tried to understand it, but I don't know that I ever really grasped how personal, and physically and emotionally demanding it is before today. Parts of this book brought me to tears, and not necessarily the expected parts like a young protagonist's loss of a parent. Of course I began reading with a heavy heart seeing it's dedicated to our late Coach Steven Bridgett (and I say "our" since Coach shared a great deal of off-the-mat wisdom, too, as I spent 3rd period study hall as his aide sophomore year, and he continued to challenge me into college). I know this work would have made Coach proud. I see the smile in his eyes just thinking about it.

The Real Thing

As a long time wrestling coach and observer, the wrestling action in this great little book is very realistic. It provides an accurate look into the minds and emotions of it's high school stars and draws you into the unique world of the world's oldest sport. Wrestlers are a very special group and with this read you are put into their world and gain a bit of understanding about the intensity, focus, drive and sacrifice it takes to climb to the top. Great for coaches, high school athletes and anyone looking for a good story.

About the Author
A Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh is an internationally known author, poet, scholar, and peace activist, and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Martin Luther King Jr. He is the author of numerous books, including the best-selling Living Buddha, Living Christ; Anger: Wisdom for Cooling the Flames; Peace Is Every Step; and The Miracle of Mindfulness. He has founded monastic communities in France, Vermont, and California and teaches actively around the world.

Heart warming and eye opening...

I have my Spiritual Director to thank for introducing me to Buddhist Monk, Thich Nhat Hanh. He is revitalizing the way I view my life, my exchanges and the way I conduct myself in general. TRUE LOVE: A PRACTICE FOR AWAKENING THE HEART is a wonderful example of Hanh's sensitive treatment of the human experience and how each relationship can (and should) be sacred. For me, this includes the day-to-day exchanges, as well more intimate (maybe even romantic) ones. I am grateful for this beautiful piece - a quick read, indeed, at only 104 pages. It goes very fast, trust me on this! He starts out by giving insight into the four aspects of love in Buddhist practice (maitri, karuna, mudita and upeksha). I do not want to "give away the plot," and the purpose of this review is to get you to buy this for yourself (at such a reasonable price, at that!), so I will only say that he gives the reader insight on a more holistic approach to harmony and good living with others.

All of humankind deserves to give and receive love. This is something I know to be true. Many of us have been damaged, along the footpath of life, and have walled ourselves off from its healing powers. These powers run deep and the capacity that we have for helping people is immense, once we tap into the source. Please read this book and learn how to really find your inner source of loving energy that can be shared with everyone you encounter in your lifetime. You will not be the same, once you read this, and your life will change for the better.

Challenging, Humbling and Remarkable

BACKGROUND: I have been married 33 years and I have a great marriage that has hit a rough spot. We're friends, we've owned a business together, we respect each other and love each other. We've entered a new chapter called Retirement and I am struggling. Of course, there is more to the story such as my husband's painful layoff that left him flattened and emotionally shutdown. And my stress about the ability to let go and be less fearful in this unknown chapter without clinging or pressurizing my husband to fill the space. That said, I am grateful that I found this book at this phase of my life.

TRUE LOVE: This book tops the mountain of books I have read lately on the topic of "Love". No other book that I have read penetrates the romantic layers and commercial definitions that pepper us with ordinary findings or provides "just enough" advice, yet falls short of direction for developing enduring and enriching love. This is a journey and lesson(s)of abiding love beyond oneself. I have one caveat for readers who try the techniques covered in True Love: Participants need a level of emotional integrity where both parties play fair, are trustworthy and respectful. For example: Practicing giving freedom to a spouse who has a history of infidelity might be painful. Obviously, I am NO expert, but these exercises will let you know how to proceed. Deepening relationships has elements such as loving someone more than yourself,emotionally supporting them without requirements, promoting freedom, etc. The message is simple, but not easy and conveyed in a loving way so that one can translate them into their world. Thich Nhat Hanh embodies love, his lessons have humbled me and given me peace, but homework!

so easy to say, so difficult to do

There are many ways to study Buddhism, depending on the country of origin of the writer. The early western travellers made a fundamental mistake when they tried to find one-to-one correlations between Buddhism and Christianity ("Buddha is the asian Jesus; the rules of dharma are the Ten Commandments; the story of Buddha's birth is like Bethlehem, etc"). In fact, there is no such comparison that really fits - Buddhism simply *is* what it is. In some cultures, where people are not scustomarily literate, Buddhism like Christianity, uses parables or assigns human form to the ideas and concepts as a means of teaching the way to be, which further complicates things. In fact, Buddhism does not require the admission of the existence of God ( or not) and is an intellectual tradition just as much as a spiritual one.

Thich Nhat Tran has distilled the teachings down to four simple rules, and this book presents them beautifully as an introduction to day-to-day practice of lovingkindness. I assume this is a translation from the original, and the writing is very clear, in fact deceptively so.

This book was recommended to me by a dear friend who knew that I have been wounded by anger in the past. I think for many searchers, books like this help you to make sense out of your life, providing comfort and insight to be a better person. Anger? it just "is" and it gets in the way.

I hope that every person plagued by anger issues can learn this and put the lessons to heart. The world owudl be a better place if we all practiced these principles.
